Freshwater Mussels: Darwin's Exception or Evolutionary Brilliance?

Stormwater Presents Speaker Series

Freshwater mussels have a unique means of reproduction. They are dependent upon fish to complete their reproductive cycle. Mussels produce a microscopic larval stage called a glochidia, that when released into the water, must attach to a host fish or die. This glochidium lives off the fish similar to a parasite, until it develops into a juvenile mussel and drops off the fish to become free-living. Mussels vary greatly in the number and diversity of fishes that serve as suitable hosts. Some mussels have more than 20 known fish hosts while others have only one known host. This has implications in determining the distribution and abundance of a mussel species. Several mussel species found in the Zumbro River system will be used as examples of this and show how the relationship between mussels and their fish host(s) can determine mussel distribution and abundance.
