Phosphorus in Rochester's Rivers

Stormwater Speaker Series

Nutrients are essential for living organisms in our lakes, rivers, and streams. However, excess nutrients have a negative impact on water quality because they feed algal blooms which block sunlight to aquatic plants and use up available oxygen when the plant matter dies and decomposes. Algal blooms can also change the pH of the water which stresses aquatic organisms. Occasionally, these algal blooms can be toxic to people and pets. There are many sources of excess nutrients in our waterways, including: agricultural practices, stormwater runoff, wastewater discharge, and the lawn care practices of homeowners. This presentation will review how the City of Rochester has been working to reduce the amount of phosphorus entering area rivers for many years and the potential opportunities for further reducing nutrients like phosphorus entering the Zumbro River and its tributaries.
