Emerald Ash Borer - Managing the Green Menace

Stormwater Speaker Series

Emerald Ash Borer has killed 10’s of millions of trees in the US since 2002 when it was first found near Detroit, Michigan. Currently 29 states have positively confirmed its existence. State and local government agencies and private land owners are bearing the cost of managing this devastating insect. Minnesota has the largest number of ash trees of any state and is estimated to contain 900 million ash trees. As EAB populations increase exponentially, tree mortality also increases exponentially. It has been proven that it only takes 8-10 years from the time EAB is detected before every ash tree in the city is dead. This presentation will focus on what the City of Rochester is doing to manage this pest and what homeowners can do to save their trees from certain death. Anyone who owns ash trees or anyone who has questions about EAB should attend this presentation.

Presentation by Jeff Haberman, Forester for the Rochester Park Department
