Rochester Public Music brings people together through concerts, cultural programs, and music education. Our events are free and public by design.

We turn parks into concert venues, bring artists into classrooms, and share music across neighborhoods. Our work is rooted in shared experience, local connection, and the belief that music belongs to everyone.

Music with Purpose.

Rochester Public Music is a department of the City of Rochester.

Our Programs

  • FORWARD Park Concerts: Free summer concerts in Rochester parks. Local bands, local food, and space for everyone to gather.
  • Riverside Music Series: Live music. Big names. No tickets. Large-scale concerts featuring chart-topping acts and rising stars.
  • Sound School: In-school residencies where students explore rhythm, movement, and musical identity — from hip hop and taiko drumming to close-harmony singing.
  • Passport Sessions: Free outdoor concerts during Thursdays Downtown, celebrating culture and connection through sound.

Rochester's own 50-piece symphonic wind ensemble under the direction of guest conductor Ryan Anderson performing the songs of summer including Bizet's "Carmen Suite", Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring", Leonard Cohen’s "Hallelujah", Sousa's “Manhattan Beach March”,  and Carmen Dragon’s arrangement of “America the Beautiful”. The Rochester Concert Band is a volunteer ensemble that is open by competitive audition only. The ensemble has become a Rochester institution that can trace its history back to the early 1870s.

Ryan Anderson is the director of bands 7-12 at Dover Eyota High School in Eyota, Mn, including concert, jazz, marching and athletic band performance. The Dover Eyota band recently was recognized nationally as a semi finalist for a Grammy Award for Music Education. While at Interlochen, Michigan, he studied with Keith Aleo and was director of the Lakeside Jazz Ensemble. Ryan is a graduate of The University of Minnesota- Morris and student of Doc and Kay Carlson. He resides in Eyota with his wonderful wife and two children. Mr. Anderson has been active as music judge, clinician and guest conductor for instrumental music.
