The Zumbro River that European Farmers saw in 1860 was very different from the river we see today. While no one planned to change the river, our well-meaning city-building and intensive farming practices have changed the Zumbro from a slow, winding prairie river with clear water and few floods into an eroded river that runs brown in some places and floods an average of once every seven years. While the challenges facing the Zumbro River are daunting, we’ve faced and overcome similar problems in the past.
