April 26, 2021 – ROCHESTER, MINN. – The Public Works Department is seeking feedback on the potential traffic calming solutions for East River Road NE. A Virtual Open House is planned for April 29, 2021. The alternatives presented during this virtual open house are the result of multiple neighborhood meetings and conversations that occurred in 2019-2020.
Options for the public to learn more about the project and provide feedback include:
- Attending a live virtual presentation with a question and answer session on April 29, 2021 at either noon or 6:00 p.m. Session information is available here and includes both a link to the meeting and a call-in number for audio only options.
- Visiting the project website and completing a survey. A recording of an April 29 presentation will be posted on the project website.
Feedback on the potential traffic calming solutions will be received through the end of the day on May 13, 2021.

Residents of the impacted area petitioned for East River Road NE from 24 Street NE to Broadway Avenue North be considered for the Neighborhood Traffic Management Program. The petition included concerns over cut-through traffic, vehicle speeds, poor sight lines and safety of pedestrians and cyclists due to the lack of sidewalks in the area. A 2019 traffic study confirmed high levels of traffic use this route as a shortcut between Broadway Avenue North and 37 Street NW. The study also confirmed that many of these vehicles are exceeding the posted speed limit.
The goal of the Neighborhood Traffic Management Program is to work closely with neighborhood residents in order to identify various traffic concerns, conduct appropriate studies to quantify any problems, develop criteria for prioritizing projects, and implement solutions in order to rectify safety concerns and lower traffic speeds. Traffic calming will improve the safety of all road users, and create more pleasant neighborhoods for the residents of Rochester.
