Student Art Opportunity

In preparation for Fire Prevention Week in October, the Rochester Fire Department invites all students PreK through Grade 8 to submit their original artwork for display at the five Rochester fire houses this fall. 

This year’s theme for Fire Prevention Week is "Charge into Fire Safety. Lithium-Ion Batteries in your Home"
Artwork should reflect the theme, fire prevention in general, or getting to know your local fire department.

Artwork should follow these guidelines:

• Visual art on paper
• Designed for hanging on wall
• Maximum Size: 12 inches by 18 inches
• Labeled clearly on the back with Name, Grade, School, and Teacher
• Optional: may use media attached securely to the paper (e.g., yarn, foil, macaroni, etc.)

Submission Deadline: October 3

Fire safety education is not just for school children.  Teenagers, adults, and the elderly are also at risk from fires.  It is important for everyone to take some time to understand how to prevent a fire from starting and how to stay safe if a fire does start.  

Fire Prevention Week is a week set aside across the nation to help keep everyone informed about the importance of fire safety.  Every year, Fire Prevention Week is given a different theme to help focus fire prevention education on a current fire related issue that is affecting the nation.

National Fire Prevention Week has been observed yearly since 1922 during the week in which October 9th occurs. Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire. This conflagration originated on the evening of October 8, 1871 near Mrs. O’Leary’s barn with a popular story blaming a cow for kicking over a lantern. However, October 9th is remembered because the fire caused the most damage and destruction to the City of Chicago and its residents on that date.
